Opening a business bank account in Rwanda comes straight after company registration. You need it to receive payments, pay suppliers and salaries, and pay taxes and RSSB contributions cleanly. Rwanda has a range of commercial banks, and each sets its own documents, fees and onboarding steps within the rules of the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR). This page explains what banks typically ask for, using Bank of Kigali's published requirements as a worked example, and how to avoid delays.

Kigali Business Setup prepares your account opening pack and introduces you to bank relationship teams. We do not hold client money and we are not a bank or a licensed financial adviser. We save you trips back and forth by getting the paperwork right the first time.

Before you start

You need a registered business. Banks ask for your certificate of registration from the Rwanda Development Board, so if you have not done this yet, see company registration in Rwanda. The company code on that certificate is also your TIN, which banks and RRA use to identify you.

Your account opening checklist

  • [ ] RDB certificate of incorporation
  • [ ] Memorandum and articles of association
  • [ ] Notarised board resolution naming signatories and signing rules
  • [ ] ID or passport for each signatory, with work or residence permit for foreigners
  • [ ] Passport photos of each signatory
  • [ ] Proof of the company's registered address
  • [ ] Beneficial ownership details, matching what you declared to RDB
  • [ ] Initial deposit

Banks can ask for more as part of their know-your-customer checks, for example details of expected transactions, source of funds or documents for foreign corporate shareholders. Have notarised copies of any foreign parent company documents ready.

The foreign founder problem, and how to solve it

The most common snag for foreign founders is timing. Bank of Kigali asks foreign signatories for a passport with a work permit, yet an investor permit application asks for your business documents. A sensible order is:

  1. Register the company with RDB.
  2. Apply for your investor or employment permit on Irembo. See Rwanda work permit.
  3. Open the business account once your status is in place, or ask the bank whether it accepts a resident director as signatory in the meantime.

If you are applying for an RDB investment certificate, the registration fee is paid to RDB's accounts at Bank of Kigali, which can be done in cash before your own business account is open.

Choosing a bank

Questions worth asking each bank:

  • What are the monthly fees, transaction charges and minimum balances?
  • Does it offer foreign currency accounts, and what documents does it need for them?
  • How good is its internet banking for paying RRA, RSSB and suppliers?
  • Does it offer mobile money integration for collecting payments?
  • Can directors outside Rwanda authorise payments online?
  • How long does onboarding usually take?

Mistakes that delay account opening

  • Unsigned or un-notarised board resolution. Bank of Kigali asks for a notarised resolution, so a simple signed letter is not enough.
  • Signatory details that do not match RDB records. The names, IDs and roles on the resolution should match the directors and shareholders on your certificate and beneficial ownership declaration.
  • Expired documents. A passport or permit close to expiry can stall the file. Renew first if needed.
  • Missing foreign parent documents. If a foreign company owns shares, keep its notarised and translated incorporation documents ready, as the bank may ask for the same papers RDB did.

After the account is open

Use the business account for all business income and costs. It makes bookkeeping far easier and supports your annual return. RRA accepts e-payment through banks and internet banking, so you can pay VAT, PAYE and income tax directly from the account. See our tax declaration guide for the deadlines and our accounting and payroll page for RSSB.

Personal accounts for expats

Moving to Kigali yourself? A personal account helps with rent, salary and daily life, and the DGIE class K permit for retirees asks for statements from a bank in Rwanda. Each bank sets its own requirements for personal accounts, so ask before you go. See our move to Rwanda guide for the bigger picture.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need to open a business bank account in Rwanda?

Bank of Kigali, for example, asks for the RDB certificate of registration, a notarised board resolution, passport photos of the signatories, a copy of each signatory's ID for Rwandans or a valid passport with a work permit for foreigners, and a minimum opening balance of RWF 10,000.

Can a foreigner open a business bank account in Rwanda?

Yes, but expect the bank to ask foreign signatories for proof of immigration status. Bank of Kigali lists a valid international passport with a work permit for foreign signatories. If you do not yet have a permit, ask the bank about alternatives before you apply.

How much does a business account cost in Rwanda?

It depends on the bank and account type. As of October 2026, Bank of Kigali lists a monthly fee of RWF 3,000 for its corporate current account and RWF 2,000 for its SME current account, each with a RWF 10,000 minimum opening balance. Compare tariffs before choosing.

Do I need a company before opening a business account?

Yes. Banks ask for the RDB certificate of registration, so register your company first. Registration is free and online with RDB, and the company code doubles as your TIN. Cooperatives provide their Rwanda Cooperative Agency certificate instead.

What is a board resolution for a bank account?

It is a written decision of the company's directors to open the account, naming who may sign and on what terms. Bank of Kigali asks for it to be notarised. We help you draft it so it matches your articles of association and the bank's format.

Can I pay taxes from my business bank account?

Yes. RRA accepts e-payment through banks and internet banking, as well as cash or cheque at any commercial bank and MTN Mobile Money. Paying from the business account keeps a clean record for your books and annual return.

Do I need a personal account in Rwanda as well?

Often, yes. Some residence permits, such as the DGIE class K permit for retirees, ask for bank statements from a bank in Rwanda, and a local personal account makes salaries and rent easier. Requirements for personal accounts vary by bank.
